Plan Ahead
As soon as you know you'll be travelling with your wedding dress, start thinking about how you'll transport it.
Will you be driving?
Flying?
Packing it for a destination wedding?
Each option comes with slightly different considerations, but the goal is always the same—protect your gown from damage, excessive creasing and moisture.
Flying With Your Wedding Dress
If you're travelling by plane, we strongly recommend taking your wedding dress as carry-on luggage wherever possible.
Checked baggage can occasionally be delayed or misplaced, and your wedding dress is simply too valuable and sentimental to risk if you can avoid it.
Before you fly:
Check your airline's carry-on size guidelines.
Contact the airline in advance to ask whether they have a wardrobe or hanging space available onboard (some aircraft do, although this can't usually be guaranteed).
Keep your gown in its garment bag to protect it during travel.
Most airlines are very familiar with travelling brides and will do their best to help where possible.
Driving With Your Dress
If you're travelling by car, hang your gown where possible rather than folding it tightly into a suitcase.
If laying it flat is your only option, avoid placing heavy luggage on top of it.
Keep your gown away from food, drinks and anything that could stain the fabric.
If you'll be stopping overnight, take the gown inside rather than leaving it in a hot or damp vehicle.
Will My Dress Crease?
Most wedding dresses will develop some creases during travel, particularly if they've been folded for any length of time.
This is completely normal.
The type of fabric will influence how noticeable the creasing is. Soft tulle often recovers quickly, while satin, crepe and mikado may show more visible fold lines.
Fortunately, most travel creases can be removed before your wedding.
Should I Steam My Dress?
Many gowns benefit from a light steam after travelling.
However, wedding dresses are delicate garments, and different fabrics respond differently to heat and moisture.
If you're unsure, ask your bridal stylist or seamstress for fabric-specific advice before your wedding.
Many venues also have professional garment steamers available or can recommend a local supplier.
Destination Weddings
If you're travelling overseas, allow yourself plenty of time after arriving before your wedding day.
This gives your gown time to hang naturally, allows creases to relax and gives you time to arrange steaming if required.
Avoid arriving the night before your wedding if possible—you'll appreciate having a little breathing room.
Protect Your Dress Until the Wedding
Once you arrive, hang your gown in a cool, dry room away from direct sunlight.
Leave it inside its garment bag until it's time to steam or get dressed.
If you're staying in accommodation, check that the hanging space is clean and large enough to allow your gown to hang freely without being crushed.
